our story
Remembering Together is a project led by Greenspace Scotland and funded by the Scottish Government. The project has commissioned artists in all 32 local authority areas in Scotland to co-create with communities to offer a place to connect, to reflect and to create. Remembering Together is about creating together, being part of a process to commemorate those who have lost their lives, and those who have experienced loss and change due to COVID. It is also about recognising and celebrating the ways in which Scottish communities have come together during the most difficult times.
For East Dunbartonshire, the artist Elena Mary Harris has consulted with communities across the region to design and build 12 individual memorials, marked with 12 covered benches. Each bench tells it’s own story. To find the locations of all the benches go to the SITES page of this website.
The memorials are made up of three main elements: the bench, the stories and the walk. The bench is simple, it acts as a marker and as a space for reflection in existing community spaces. The stories are in the form of a sound piece, different for each memorial. These sound pieces bring together stories of local groups and individuals and performances from local musicians. They show the wealth of different experiences and impacts from across East Dunbartonshire. The walk represents how people were finding new routes through their communities and creating new connections through the pandemic.
